WCS Exam Exemption Policy

With written permission from the parent, guardian or custodian, a student may be exempt from a teacher-made exam if he/she:

  • misses no more than 4 class periods AND has no more than 3 tardies per semester with an "A" average
  • misses no more than 3 class periods AND has no more than 3 tardies per semester with a "B" average
  • misses no more than 2 class periods AND has no more than 3 tardies per semester with a "C" average
  • misses no more than 1 class periods AND has no more than 3 tardies per semester with a "D" average

• Any student who qualifies for exam exemption may choose to take the exam.
• School-related absences will not count against a student's exam exemption. Quarantine absences will not count against a student's exam exemption.
• A student's privilege to be exempted under this policy will be forfeited if the student has been assigned to In-School Suspension and/or Out-of-School Suspension for disciplinary actions.
• Teacher-made tests do not include any developed and administered by NCDPI (i.e. EOC, CTE, field tests, etc.), or any AP exams.
• Students enrolled in AP courses will still be required to take the AP exam.
• Students will be counted absent during class periods for which they are exempt if they do not attend school for state reporting purposes and safety.

Students and Parents: Students will not be allowed to check out during the exam period. Students must bring a parent note in order to check out after the exam session is over. If students are not present on campus, they will be counted absent. School is in session all day on each exam day (7:45am-3:30pm)

Students must bring this paper signed by a parent/guardian to each exam and provide it to the teacher in order to leave campus early.

• If my student is exempt from an exam, they have my permission to not be in attendance for that assigned exam period. I understand that this will be an absence.
• In addition, my signature below indicates that my student may leave school at the end of a testing session during exam week.

Daily Testing Schedule

  • Morning Exam Arrival: Students must arrive no later than 7:40 AM. They must be in testing rooms by 7:45 AM.
  • Lunch: Served daily from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM.
  • Afternoon Exam Arrival: Students must be in testing rooms no later than 12:30 PM.

Testing Policies & Attendance

  • Grade Weight: All final exams count as 20% of the final grade for a course.
  • Absences: Students who miss a required exam session may receive a 0 for the exam grade unless the absence is excused and communicated with school staff.
  • Bus Transportation: Buses will operate on a regular schedule each day during exam week.
  • Electronics: Personal electronic devices must be powered off during all testing.

Dismissal & Checkout Procedures

Students will be dismissed only when all testing on campus is completed for that morning or afternoon session. Students cannot be checked out while testing is in progress.

Early Dismissal Requirements:

  • Only students with signed permission forms will be dismissed from campus at the conclusion of morning sessions.
  • Parents must email office staff to arrange checkouts via the "CONTACT US" link on the WCHS website only.
  • Students are not allowed to call for checkout permission on exam days.

Attendance Appeal Process

Any student with more than 6 absences (excused or unexcused) in a course must complete an appeal form to receive credit.

Criteria to Avoid an Appeal (Policy 4400):

  • Must have a passing average in the class (not counting the final exam).
  • Must have completed all assignments as verified by the teacher.
  • Must receive a passing score of 70 or higher on the final exam.

DEADLINE: Forms must be turned into the Main Office by 3:30 PM on Friday, January 9th, 2026.
