Wilkes Central High School Athletic Commitments

All coaches, student athletes, parents/guardians, and administrators will be responsible and accountable for promoting and upholding the athletic department’s expectations and commitments.

All student-athletes are expected to:

  • Recognize that academic achievement comes first.
  • Recognize that school expectations should be followed at all times when representing WCHS through athletics and that they should strive to always strive for excellence through leadership, hard work, and integrity.
  • Communicate openly with coaches and parents/guardians about all matters pertaining to his/her sport.
  • Attend and arrive on time for practices, games, meetings, etc.
  • Promote school spirit as a representative of his/her sport while demonstrating support for all school programs and extracurricular activities.
  • Understand playing time is at the sole discretion of the coach.

All parents/guardians are expected to:

  • Understand that coaches have autonomy in all decisions regarding playing time, style of play, strategy, line-ups, playing time, etc.
  • Demonstrate support and enthusiasm for the entire team rather than their player exclusively.
  • Be positive and constructive in the development of their leader as a student-athlete.
  • Communicate in a reasonable manner to the appropriate authority regarding athletic concerns.
  • Understand they are role models.

All coaches are expected to:

  • Communicate openly and clearly with all student-athletes, parents/guardians, and administrators.
  • Support the efforts of our WCHS Athletic Booster Club.
  • Advise parents of their philosophy as a coach and expectations of their player.

  • Supervise all coaches in a fair and thorough manner.
  • Support the efforts of our WCHS Athletic Booster Club and community of Eagle Nation supporters.
Student-Coach-Parent Communications

Wilkes Central High School believes in promoting appropriate communication practices among our student athletes, families, and coaches. We believe that discussions with the coach should be done in the appropriate place and at the appropriate time, and that these situations, when handled appropriately, can present growth opportunities for student athletes to grow in their empowered communication skills.

Appropriate Issues to Discuss:
  • The emotional and physical development of the student.
  • Ways to help your athlete grow and improve in skill development and leadership.
  • Concerns about your child’s academic and/or behavioral progress in the classroom or on the team.
  • Opportunities for your student to participate in athletics beyond high school.
Inappropriate Issues to Discuss:
  • Team strategy.
  • Play calling.
  • Other student athletes.
  • Playing time/starting line-ups.

It can be difficult to accept your child’s not playing as much as you hope. Coaches are professionals and observe players in many different situations through practice as well as games. They make judgement decisions based on what they believe is best for all students involved. Certain things can and should be discussed with the coach, but other things must be left to the discretion of the coach.

Procedures to Set Up a Student-Family/Coach Meeting

There are situations that may require a meeting between the coach and the student & parent.

  • Please do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a practice or game.
  • Any meeting that is held with a coach & parent/guardian will include the student-athlete, as all meetings should be intended to help them grow and feel empowered in how they can lead this growth.
  • Any meeting that is requested should be scheduled after observing a 24-hour period.
  • To schedule a meeting with a coach, contact the main office at 336-667-5277. Please give any staff member 24-hours to respond to a voicemail or other communication.
  • If the coach cannot be reached, call WCHS Athletic Director, Coach Chuck Cannon at 336-667-5277. He will assist you with scheduling a meeting.
