Welcome Back, Eagles!

Good afternoon, Eagle family.  Here are some important reminders for the start of our new school year.  School starts back Monday, August 28th and will operate on a regular schedule.  Students may begin being dropped off at the school at 7:15 each morning in our car line adjacent to our student parking lot (entrance #2 near the marquee).  No car riders will be admitted through the front or rear bus entrances. Parents, after dropping your student off in car line, please drive all the way to the bottom of our student parking lot before turning to exit to avoid head on collisions with our student drivers entering lanes where their assigned parking spaces are located. Our top priority is to keep everyone safe, and we appreciate your willingness to help us with this. All students should be in their homerooms on the first day of school by 7:45 a.m.  We encourage you to arrive early, as our car line and entrance to the student parking lot get very busy after 7:25 a.m.  See our Eagle Nation Newspaper: Back to School Edition for more great tips and information.

Parents:  To help us improve traffic flow in the mornings and afternoons, please make right turns only out of the WCHS student parking lot onto Moravian Falls Rd. This will ultimately expedite drop off and pick up if everyone will do their part.

Students: If you do not know your homeroom assignment, please check this in PowerSchool or come by the main office in the morning before 7:40 a.m. Homeroom teachers have schedules.

Please take time to review the 2023-24 WCHS Student Handbook.  Take note of important procedures intended to keep your students safe and prepared.

  • Students, be prepared for the 1st day by returning your laptop agreement form signed and your $10 student fee.  Turn these items in to your homeroom teacher.  More important forms will be shared with families on the first day of school.

  • Please review our dress code with your student to ensure he/she is best prepared for learning and leadership each day.  Students not meeting expectations for the dress code will be provided with school appropriate clothing at the school or parents will be notified.

  • If your child needs to check out during the school day this year, please note that we will not accept phone calls for checkouts.

    • If students need to leave school early due to illness, parent/guardian permission must be obtained by one of the following:

      • The parent/guardian checks the student out in-person in the WCHS main office.

      • The parent/guardian emails the WCHS main office through the “Contact Us” feature on our school website requesting their student be allowed to check out.  All emails will be verified with a phone call.

      • The parent/guardian faxes a note with the check out request.  All faxes received will be verified with a phone call.

  • Please discuss our cell phone/electronic policy with your child, which is based on Wilkes County Schools Board of Education Policy #4304. Your child’s cell phone, earbuds/Airpods, and other electronic devices should not be seen or heard while in class. As long as the privilege is not abused, our students will be allowed to check phones during class transitions and at lunch. Phones or other electronic devices should never be used to take photos in restrooms, locker rooms, or other areas where there is an expectation of privacy. Students not meeting these expectations may have phones confiscated by school personnel and kept in the main office secured until parent/guardians pick them up on the last day of the school week between 2-4 p.m.

  • As a reminder, anyone planning to play a sport, park on campus, or participate in an extracurricular group must have a Random Drug Testing form signed and on file.  If you signed one last year, this form is good for all 4 years of high school and is not required again.

  • Students:  Be sure to take advantage this year of FREE breakfast and lunch. You can also print the laptop agreement form attached below and bring it signed to receive your laptop on day 1.  If not, no worries.  You will receive this form in homeroom, and can bring it on the 2nd day of school.

  • Parents: Be sure to sign up for Parent Portal and the Remind for your student’s bus.  You can find information about how to access Parent Portal here.

  • Looking ahead:  Be sure to check out our sports’ teams schedules on MaxPrep.  We hope to see you out and cheering on our Eagles in the weeks ahead.  Also, there will be no school for staff or students on Monday, September 4th, for the Labor Day holiday.

Lastly, thank you so much for the part all of you played in making our back to school events a huge success!  All of us here at The Nest look forward to partnering with our Eagle Nation to Race to Unlock Potential in each of our students this year.  Have a good evening, and we will see you in the morning!

With Eagle Pride,

Dr. Freeman
