Guidelines for WCS Virtual Academy Enrollment

Student Responsibility in Online Learning

Online courses offer flexibility and convenience to earn high school credits. However, the online student must take **responsibility for his or her own learning.**

In any distance education program, the capacity for **self-directed learning is crucial**. The online learner is expected to have:

  • Internal motivation to manage learning during the course of study.
  • A basic grasp of Internet navigation skills.

While teachers provide some support, the student's motivation and technical ability are key to success.

Purpose and Scope of WCS Virtual Academy

  • Provides opportunities to enrich or supplement a student's educational program.
  • Offers options for students to complete coursework early, participate in other academic opportunities, and gain online learning experience.
  • Provides a flexible school model option, including for home school students who wish to take some high school courses.
  • The Virtual Academy was created to meet the needs of primarily **11th and 12th graders**.

Demonstrated Need for Flexibility (Counselor/Administrator Approval)

Careful consideration should occur to determine if online coursework is truly in the best interest of the student. There must be a demonstrated need for schedule flexibility before placement in WCS Virtual Academy, including:

  • Taking college courses that conflict with face-to-face graduation requirements.
  • Planning to graduate early.
  • Participating in educational opportunities (band, chorus, etc.) that conflict with course needs.
  • Family needs that require flexibility in scheduling to complete required courses.
  • Medical issues that prevent attending classes on high school campuses.
  • Long-term suspended students eligible for continued services.
General Enrollment Rule: Students should be enrolled in a face-to-face class if it is offered at the same time in their schedule.
