This course includes assessment of health status, relationship of health to a quality life, an awareness of self-control in stress management, accepting responsibility for prevention of health risks, demonstration of conflict resolution skills, understanding concepts of fitness and lifetime wellness, accepting responsibility for personal fitness and control behaviors in physical activity settings.


Physical Conditioning and Weight Training Electives

Beginning Weight Training

This class is designed for students new to strength and conditioning who do not plan to be involved in high school athletics. This course gives students the opportunity to learn fitness concepts and conditioning techniques for obtaining optimal physical fitness. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of strength training, aerobic training, and overall fitness training and conditioning. Course includes both lecture and activity sessions. Students will be empowered to make wise choices, meet challenges, and develop positive behaviors in fitness, wellness, and movement activity for a lifetime.

Sports Health and Wellness

  • Note: Students may enroll in this course multiple times for credit.

This course focuses on increasing appropriate knowledge of weight training and continued focus on agility skills. Students will participate in a program that focuses on weightlifting, agility & skills training, and cardiovascular health. Proper technique, safety precautions, and proper application of the Principles of Training will be emphasized. Students will be tested every nine weeks in 7 different areas to monitor physical progress.

Ladies Weightlifting

This course is designed for female students and will focus on increasing appropriate knowledge of weight training and continued focus on agility skills. Students will participate in a program that focuses on weightlifting, agility & skills training, and cardiovascular health.

Honors Physical Conditioning

In addition to the standard requirements for Sports Health and Wellness, students will complete an honors portfolio which includes the following requirements:

  • Create a “How To” video on the proper lifting techniques for bench presses, back squats, and deadlifts.
  • Compare and contrast the three major types of training: Hypertrophy, Strength, and Power.
  • Create a workout and nutrition program for someone who is looking to lose or gain weight and add muscle mass.
  • Keep a log for a week detailing food and drink intake along with calories and write a reflection on what was learned.
